Solid vs engineered
Solid hardwood can be sanded and refinished multiple times; it responds to humidity more than engineered products. Engineered wood uses a real wood wear layer over a stable core—often better for basements or concrete slabs when specs allow.
Installation and climate
Wood moves with moisture. Acclimation, proper underlayment or fastening, and consistent indoor humidity reduce gapping and cupping. Always follow species and product guidelines for your region.
Refinishing
When wear shows through the finish, professional sanding and refinishing can restore the floor. Thinner engineered wear layers limit how many times that process can repeat—plan with your installer up front.
